The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a 1920 German silent film and one of the defining works of Expressionist cinema — a genre defined by distorted visuals, deep shadows, and a general sense that reality itself cannot quite be trusted. If you've ever seen a horror film that made you feel uneasy without being able to explain exactly why, it owes something to this movie.

This score was written to accompany Scene 3 from Act 3 of the film live, performed by a mixed chamber ensemble. Rather than reaching for a modern cinematic sound, the music leans into the film's own era — drawing on the harmonic language and instrumental colors of early 20th century concert music to put you as squarely as possible into 1920. The ensemble was assembled specifically with that palette in mind, balancing the warmth of strings with the reedy, slightly unsettled character of the winds to match what you're seeing on screen.

The experience of silent film with live music is one of the oldest forms of communal storytelling there is. Sit back, let the ensemble do the talking, and let Dr. Caligari do the rest. Fair warning — he's not particularly trustworthy.
