Echoes of Fear

Echoes of Fear

Echoes of Fear goes looking for the things we keep locked up. The show is set inside a mind, not a haunted house, and the fear it deals in is the fear that is already waiting when you turn off the light, the thought that will not stop circling, the face at the edge of a dream you almost recognize. It opens with something intrusive, a voice in a room that should be empty, and it keeps pushing further in, past the point where anyone would want to follow. By the end the audience has met whatever it is that lives down there, and it has been theirs the whole time.

Uninvited opens the show with an alto sax alone, and a tenor joins in, so what started as one voice becomes an argument nobody asked for. The middle movement turns quiet and gives the flugelhorn a solo, the one moment where the show stops running and lets you sit with it. Then the tubas start the closer, one player and then the whole section, and In the Hall of the Mountain King builds until the trombone quartet breaks it open with Thriller and the floor drops out. A program with a real low brass block and two saxophone players who can stand up and play alone will get everything out of this one.

The music:
Uninvited (Alanis Morissette)
Dreams of the Dead (Nick Phoenix)
Vote (James Newton Howard)
Thriller (Michael Jackson)
In the Hall of the Mountain King (Edvard Grieg)
