Phased

Phased is a show about transformation, told through the three states of matter. It moves in three phases, liquid, solid, gas, and lets each one shape its own world on the field. Water flows: fluid, lyrical, and ever-moving. Ice locks into place: crystalline, sharp, and still. Steam breaks loose: energetic, rising, and wild. The show journeys through each transformation in turn, one substance wearing three completely different faces, and finds a surprising amount of drama in the simple physics of a thing changing its nature.

This show was designed for small bands to be successful. The score includes parts for all instruments, but there is significant doubling across those parts, so any combination of instruments, including less-than-ideal instrumentation, can carry the show in performance.

It's a smart, clean, visually rich concept with a built-in three-part structure that gives an ensemble genuine range to play, from the calm of flowing water to the frozen tension of ice to the untamed release of steam. And because the entire score is original, drawing its melodic character from folk material without borrowing a note that needs licensing, the whole production is clearance-free, yours to perform with nothing to chase down.

The music:

  • Original score by Ryan, in three movements (Liquid / Solid / Gas), drawing on folk-tune character

This show is rated Medium-Easy, which lines up with a concert grade of roughly 2 to 3. That's an approximation. A featured soloist or small ensemble moment can sit toward the top of that range, while full ensemble sections built around visual impact stay lighter on the musical demand.

The rating leans almost entirely on rhythmic and technical difficulty. Keys and meters are chosen to stay band-friendly and to line up with the phrasing the drill needs, and instrument ranges sit inside the grade window rather than pushing its edges.

This show is entirely original. No permissions or licensing are required.
