A “scrape” is the name that zoologists (or ornithologts?) gave to the nests that falcons make. Rather than building a tradition nest like their avian counterparts, male falcons will find safe, secluded outcroppings on cliff faces, hills, or any other places that seem safe enough. Once they find a suitable location, the bird will use its feet to dig out a shallow pit to function as a nest. Thus, the name of this nest is derived from how it’s made: by scraping away the soil. At this point, the mating pair of falcons have a spot from which they can raise their offspring; their next generation.
In this, the 2022-2023 school year, Jersey Village High School, located in the city of Jersey Village, a suburb of Houston, Texas, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. For a half a century, JVHS has been raising its own generations of Falcons, who have gone on to become leaders across all industries, fields, and walks of life.
With that in mind, Scrape is dedicated to the Jersey Village High School community, its principal, Ms. Maggie Wiley, and of course, the members (and directors) of the band program.
